Postpartum Doula Services

What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is akin to a mother's helper.  Knowledgeable and experienced in the care of newborns and new parents, postpartum doulas provide practical household help, parenting advice, emotional support and care for all family members.  Duties can include cleaning, laundry, meal preparation, running errands, pet care, sibling care or caring for baby while mom sleeps.

Families often benefit most from postpartum doula services during the first 3 months of baby's life.  Some families find 2 hours per week a helpful boost, others, such as families with twins, find several hours per day to be what they need.

What is the fee?
Postpartum doula services are $20/hour, up to 5 hours per week.
For services greater than 5 hours per week, please inquire about package options.
Postpartum doula services make a great gift!

Virtual Doula Services

What is a virtual doula?
From the Greek word meaning "woman's servant", a doula provides informational and emotional support during pregnancy, labour and the early postpartum period as well as physical comfort measures during labour.  While a traditional doula attends a birth in-person, a virtual doula provides support via phone, answering your "What now?" and "What are my options?" questions.

Why choose a virtual doula?
Most families who choose virtual doulas do so for either financial or social-emotional reasons.  As the involvement is less than a traditional doula, virtual doula services are less expensive.  For couples who feel quite confident birthing with only their medical caregivers in attendance, or who have a high desire for an intimate birth experience, having access to a virtual doula by phone is the best of both worlds -- guidance and support when you want it, privacy and autonomy when you want it!

Private Counselling

Why counselling?
Pregnancy is a time of growth and self-development, and as you move into motherhood, whether it’s for the first time or the third, psychological changes are happening within you as you’re redefining yourself and your relationships.  For many women, processing our past birth experiences is important.  For even more of us, strategizing about how we will meet fears and challenges relating to our bodies and womanhood is also necessary work.  And then there are the questions of parenting and what that will look like for you.  Sharing your concerns with a supportive, trained and experienced counsellor means you're taking good care of yourself and your family.

Who can partake in counselling?
You are welcome to partake in counselling if you are considering becoming pregnant, are currently pregnant, or if you have been pregnant in the past.  Whether or not you choose to use HypnoBirthing®, you are welcome to make use of my counselling services.  In addition to my experiences as a social worker, doula, mother and childbirth educator, I have specialized education in the areas of bereavement and sexual abuse.

What is counselling like?

All counselling is conducted using a client-centred approach, which means we start with what you want to, and your limits are always respected.  My goal is to support you as you heal and grow, to empower you to draw on your strengths, and to offer you resources that may be of use.  Together we can determine what length of counselling best meets your needs; often only one to three sessions will suffice.

Where do I go?
Counselling sessions can be held in your home, at my west mountain location in Hamilton or over the phone if travel is a barrier.

What is the fee?

The fee for counselling is $80 per hour.  For those with financial challenges, I operate on a sliding scale.  Please contact me for details.
